Local council hedges against flood risks with predictive mapping

With floods costing NSW an estimated $200 million a year, local councils are making an effort to minimise their impact and protect local communities.

The former Leichhardt Local Government Area (LGA) — now Inner West Council — commissioned an interactive map to raise awareness of flood risk in the community and give NSW State Emergency Services (SES) the ability to enhance emergency management during floods.

For city planners, the map identifies where investments in stormwater infrastructure and flood hazard management are needed most.

  • Increase community awareness
  • Enhance NSW SES capabilities
  • Identify at-risk communities and evacuation routes
  • Influence infrastructure investments plans
